Introduction

Hello and welcome to College Prep. This course is a college prep elective designed to help you prepare for your life after High School. In this course you will complete the following:
1. Register with College Board.com
2. Complete an Interest Inventory with California Career Zone.com
3. Complete a college prep transcript evaluation
4. Learn what the A-G requirements are.
5. Visit local Colleges, Universities, Tech and Medical Training Programs, Junior Colleges, Job Corps and many other post High School Educational options.
6. Determine what the testing requirements are for college entry.
7. Register and Prepare for the SAT, SAT Subject Test and/or the ACT test.
8. Complete financial aid applications.
9. Apply for college scholarships, grants and loans.
10. Complete college applications.
11. Practice writing college entrance essays.
12. Prepare for college interviews.
13. Learn how to take Cornell Notes.
14. Select your post secondary education course of study.
15. Educate parents on ways they can prepare students for college.

Cash for College

Last week we examined career choices and we looked at the different post-secondary (after high school) educational options you have. We also create a timeline for things you should accomplish this year.
This week we are going to focus on different ways you can plan to pay for college.

STEP 1: Visit the CAL GRANT (California Student Aid Commission) website. CAL GRANTs are state funded grants given to students to help pay for college expenses. The awards do not have to be paid back.

STEP 2 - SCHOLARSHIPS - AKA Free money you don't have to pay back.

Create an account with FastWeb. FastWeb is the nation's largest, most accurate, and most frequently updated scholarship database online. (click on the Register at Fastweb in the upper left hand corner and follow the directions.)

STEP 3 - STUDENT LOANS - Money you borrow at a lower rate because its paying for school. Visit Sallie Mae's website. Sallie Mae is the nation's leading provider of student loans, helping millions of Americans achieve their dream of a higher education.

STEP 4-Take the CASH FOR COLLEGE packet home to your parent/guardian.

Interest Profiler

Before we can decide what we want to do with the rest of our lives, its best to figure out how we enjoy spending our time and what we are good at. CA Career Zone is an online self-assessment that can help determine some fields you might want to consider.

Step 1: Click Here and select Start a New Interest Profiler. Follow the directions to determine some careers you might enjoy.

Step 2: Once you have completed all 180 questions the program will suggest some career choices for you. Select two that you may be interested in and complete the Worksheet provided.

Step 3: Once you have completed the Worksheet(s) you will be asked to report your career back to the class. In the meantime register with College Board.com.

Step 4: Complete the Scavenger Hunt.
